When the word cheese is mentioned, most of us immediately think of France. We can't help it; it's a knee-jerk reaction. As excellent as are the hundreds of cheeses that originate from all corners of the globe, France is always the first country the comes to mind when discussing cheese making. Our French Cheese Assortment captures a good bit of French cheese culture with the four cheeses listed below. This classic French goat cheese is quite fresh and spreadable. Formed in the shape of a log, enjoy this cheese on salads, as a snack, or with fruit for dessert. This famous soft-ripened cheese from Normandie has a creamy interior beneath a fluffy (and edible) white rind. Similar to Brie, but with a slightly fuller flavor. Its milk comes from red-nosed Manech ewes raised on farms.

Made for those cheese lovers with a taste for robust flavors and aromatic cheeses. Our French Cheeses for the Connoisseur is perfect for a Francophile-centric fromagier, or anyone looking to enjoy some bold selections of French cheese classics. We have included four of our favorites (a virtually impossible decision).
Cheeses include:
  • Pont L'Eveque: One of the world's ancient cheeses, Pont L'Eveque is a small washed-rind cheese that dates back to the Thirteenth Century. It is well known for its delicate bouquet, which is said to be reminiscent of the Norman countryside. However, it does tend to have a strong, pungent aroma that is not for the timid. (8.5 oz)
  • Gruyere de Comte Reserve: Comte is made with fresh Alpine milk and formed into 80-pound wheels. This extraordinary cheese is a noticeable upgrade from our base Gruyere de Comte, more complex and nutty. Comte Reserve has a pronounced nose and is a divine treasure cherished by connoisseurs. (8 oz)
  • Buche de Chevre: This wonderful goat's milk cheese from Poitou in the Loire Valley comes to us in handcrafted wooden crates the most exquisite chevre we have ever tasted! When enjoying this cheese, you savor a delightful combination of flavors and textures in each bite. Buche de Chevre is a true delicacy that begs for a warm, crusty French baguette and a glass of robust red wine from neighboring Bordeaux. (8 oz)
  • Fourme d'Ambert: This AOC (name controlled) creamy blue cheese is a lovely French treasure. Fourme d'Ambert is cave-aged for a minimum of two months, made from raw cow's milk and has a tremendous, creamy, full-bodied flavor. (8 oz)
Please note that any item temporarily out of stock will be substituted with a similar item of equal value.

Pont l'eveque Grain d'Orge - soft washed rind cow's milk cheese - 7.7 oz/220 gr, France. Packed in a nice wooden box. Probably the oldest Norman, it takes two liters of milk to make one Pont l'eveque of 8.8 oz. After washing, the rind is moist and ochre in color. The pate is creamy yellow, fine-textured, and smooth. It sinks under finger pressure but has no elasticity. As the cheese ripens, the rind grows sticky and reddens, and small holes spread through the pate. Further ripening will result in pate that glistens with fat when cut. There are lingering traces of sweetness in the taste. During the affinage, the cheeses are washed, brushed and turned. Compliments: This cheese goes well toasted with walnuts and grapes. Appropriate wines: Burgundy, Bordeaux, Cabernet, Merlot. Percentage of Fat: 45%

Jacquin Crottin De Chavignol - goat's milk aged cheese - 2.1 oz/ 60 gr, France. The true Jacquin Crottin de Chavignol is produced from the milk of an alpine breed of goat. This is one of the rare cheeses that can be eaten at different stages of maturity. Texture: Fresh from the cheese vat, it is often eaten clothed in fine herbs and at this stage in the maturing process it has a creamy texture. After about six weeks the smell is stronger and its pate has become dry and brittle and has a firmer texture. Taste: Fresh, it has a creamy, nutty taste. Later on in the maturing process it acquires a pronounced flavor. As the cheese continues to mature, the robust taste increases, but is never sour. Appropriate wine: White Sancerre.
